Here's a simplified analogy to illustrate: Think of lossless as pure vanilla extract - it takes the original flavour and compresses it without throwing any of that flavour away, and lossy as artificial vanilla extract which simulates a few of the most prominent flavour chemicals present in pure vanilla but discards most of the other chemicals that also contribute to the overall flavour but in much more smaller subtle percentages. This is a dramatic oversimplification of how lossy compression works, but I highly recommend people search the web for a more accurate and detailed description if curious as it is far far more complex than that. Lossy formats use discrete cosine transforms or more advanced math like wavelets to essentially mathematically represent the waves present in the music as a sort of a simulation of what is actually there. Lossy formats use more advanced mathematics to convert the original audio into a completely different form that mathematically can simulate the general idea of what the original data was but can not reproduce the original data with complete accuracy. This represents formats such as FLAC, PNG, GIF. It is compressed in a manner similar to how a ZIP file archive is compressed whereby upon decompression the original data is 100% restored. "waves", right? Or what do you mean with "mathematically"? Lossless compression of audio means that zero information is discarded from the original audio data when it is compressed. "Lossy audio formats basically try to mathematically represent the music" -> doesn't lossless do that too? I mean, both are stored as. If it involves monetary transaction, you have a right to complain. But since a few airheads with more money than sense have started throwing terms like "entitled" around, everyone seems way too eager to please people who are taking their money. If they have a service & they're charging for it, there is room & reason for complaints. Game developers aren't your bosom buddies just because they chat with you. But selling something that should've been included in the game release itself - extra or otherwise - is not a gift or a favour to you. In this case, since the composer owns the rights to his own work, if HE came here to sell it, it would be his right to do so. Others go along with it, but I always called that bullshit. This is just like that kid at recess that makes up the game rules on the spot, changing them to suit his own needs. Pillars of Eternity had ridiculous prices at launch, but you could choose WHAT you wanted to get. It's become standard to charge for extra stuff at launch, and while I don't exactly like it, at least they're upfront about it & you know exactly what you're getting. It may not be old, but it's a 2013 release nonetheless. They already have their own evil bean-counters hatching up contrived Machiavellian plots, why make their job easier? That's a good achievement obtained by GOG mostly for old titles. I obviously prefer all-in-one deals, but you can't demand that every new game will include all goodies for free.
